Jammers lose unbeaten away league record

Felixstowe and Walton inflict Maldon and Tiptree's first away defeat since the season started way back in Summer 2018

Felixstowe and Walton FC v Maldon and Tiptree FC Bostik League One North Saturday 30 March 2019

Jammers manager Wayne Brown continued to utalise his full squad with Stephane Ngamvoulou, Laste Dombaxe and Tariq Issa coming in for Tobi Coker, Percy Kiangebeni and Kojo Awotwi who took their places on the substitutes bench

After dominating the opening exchanges Maldon and Tiptree got off to the perfect start with a goal after just 5 minutes when play was moved across the edge of the home penalty box before Matthew Briggs and Eddie-Louis Dsane played a neat one-two that left the former with a sight of goal and he took the chance well with a shot that bounced into the net off the far post. Continuing to have the better of the play the visitors Stephane Ngamvoulou's through ball put Jorome Slew clear but he screwed his shot wide before the home side got their first attack in with Miles Powell playing in Liam Hillyard but his weak shot was easily collected by visiting keeper Ben McNamara. The Jammers Laste Dombaxe then featured strongly with good work on the left ending with a shot that went wide before he put a 20 metre free kick over the bar before he put a speculative effort from 30 metres also over the bar. The visitors then passed up a glorious chance to increase their lead when Dsane's fine run to the byline ended with a cross that freed Slew in front of goal but he saw his effort rebound back off the bar from where Dombaxe hit his close range shot wide. After not producing much in the way of goal scoring chances the game was turned on its head after 35 minutes with two goals in a minute for the home side. The first came in controversial circumstances when a clear back pass to home keeper Jack Spurling was not picked up by the referee and from his long, high clearance Jammers defender Billy Roast was only able to head the ball back to McNamara who although holding the ball in front of him the ref's assistant, who was looking directly into a low full sun, deemed that the ball had been taken over the line and flagged for a goal. Worse was to follow for the Jammers just a minute later when the home sides Kye Ruel was upended inside the penalty area and there could be no arguments this time as Jack Ainsley comfortably put the spot kick home. Still looking the more likely to score the visitors continued to pass up a number of reasonable scoring chances especially when Slew's strong goal bound shot was just pushed away by Spurling and again when Dsane went close with a shot after getting down the left to leave a rather improbable half time score in Felixstowe and Walton's favour.

Kicking down the slight slope the home side used this in their favour with strong clearances up to Powell and Hillyard which caught a strangely nervous Maldon and Tiptree back line on the back foot and although the visitors Briggs again caused danger with a good run and cross which was only cleared at the expense of a corner and Slew saw his shot blocked on the goal line it was the Seasiders who made the first breakthrough of the second half. This came after 60 minutes after a previous long clearance had seen Hillyard hit a good chance over the bar he made no mistake when Powell gained possession from a breakaway before crossing for Hillyard to put his headere into the far corner. Spurred by this reverse and buoyed by fresh legs in their substitutes Maldon and Tiptree again got the upper hand and put considerable pressure on the home defence who generally stood up well. Briggs, down the left, looked especially dangerous and he played Tariq Issa through but he put a good chance wide before another fine run by Briggs produced a goal for his team after 69 minutes when his driving run ended with a cross that was only cleared as far as Dombaxe just inside the penalty area from where he hit a good effort into the corner to bring Maldon and Tiptree right back into the game. Going all out to at least get another goal back the visitors surged forward but often their final ball was cut out or overran with the home defence able to counter all that was thrown at them although both Slew and Dsane almost made their efforts count but saw goal bound shots just blocked away. Dsane did cause some panic with a shot that Spurling saved but could not hold and a home defender almost turned the ball into his own net but luckily for him the ball rolled wide then a firm goal bound drive from Briggs that was destined for the corner was somehow blocked but all to no avail as the home side took the three points.
