Jammers get an opening day win

A fine team performance gives Maldon and Tiptree all three points against a resolute Brightlingsea Regent.

Maldon and Tiptree got a big plus with the return of midfield maestro Matt Lock who missed most of last season through injury but were hit by the late withdrawal of central defender Gavin Greenfield who had still not fully overcome the injury sustained in the Jammers last pre season friendly.
On a summery humid afternoon and after a cagey opening it was the home side who created the first real scoring chance when Sam Newson pounced on a long ball forward to beat the offside trap and go on a clear run on goal but in trying to round visiting keeper Ollie Bowles he just touched the ball too close to Regent's number one and he was able to make a good brave save at Newson's feet. The Jammers started to play a crisp passing game into feet and Adam Mills and Rhys Henry combined well to give Kieran Monlouis a shooting chance that was just charged down. The visitors were themselves playing with plenty of spirit and after Josh Gould had gone upfield to deliver a long throw in he moved into the penalty area to get up well to put his header onto the bar and just over. The home sides Mills then put a fierce low 20 metre shot just wide of the near post before the same player hit a speculative 25 metre drive wide then Newson and Monlouis combined down the right for the latter to just hit wide of the far post. Regent's Russell Malton then found space at the far post to get onto a Jake Turner cross but he was not able to get good contact and the chance was quickly gone. Maldon and Tiptree took the lead after 28 minutes when Lock's corner was played back to him by Mills and when the second cross was put in the unfortunate Regent player Turner misplaced his header to put the ball into his own net just inside the far post. The visitors responded well and secured an equaliser just four minutes later when Jake Clowsley hit a free kick from all of 30 metres that seemed to catch home keeper Daniel Wilks off guard and he could not prevent the ball from slipping into the net off his shoulder. Play was pretty even for the rest of the half but after 41 minutes the Jammers squandered a great chance to move ahead when Monlouis, after being bought down for a clear penalty, put his low spot kick too close to Bowles and the keeper got down well low to his right to palm the ball away. There was just time for Wilks to more than make up for any uncertainty with Regent's goal when he launched himself in spectacular fashion to just claw over Turner's fine strike from 25 metres.

The second half produced less in the way of goal scoring chances but as the half wore on the home side gradually pushed their lively opponents back and did have the better of the play. Another fine move by the home side early in the half saw Mills and Kyle Hammond combining well to give newcomer Robbie McDaid a half chance but the ball was cleared just as he was about to pull the trigger before McDaid bravely tried to get on the end of a great ball from Newson on the right but as he made slight contact almost on the goal line the ball ran to safety. Unfortunately the effort left the forward unable to continue with another newcomer, Michael Salako. taking his place. On 73 minutes the home side were justifiably rewarded for a fine piece of football when Lock and Newson worked the ball out to Hammond on the right and his pin point centre found the head of Mills (pictured) to put a fine header past Bowles, who had followed the ball to his right only to see Mills put his header to his left and into the corner. The visitors tried to respond and a rare foray towards the home penalty area saw Kieran Ayling firing over the angle of bar and post after substitute Harry McDonald's long ball had provided a chance of a shot before another half chance saw Matt Cripps stab a shot wide after the ball became loose from a corner. Some more fine football from the home side saw Rhys Henry fashion a chance with a great ball into Newson but again Bowles was equal to the shot with a good clutching save before the game almost drifted to a close with the Jammers content to hold out for the win and the visitors not able to break down a strong home defence.
