Jammers fall to late, late winner

AFC Sudbury come from behind to score goals at the end of each half to secure a deserved win
Maldon and Tiptree FC v AFC Sudbury Bostik League One North Tuesday 23 January 2018
Jammers boss Kevin Horlock made four changes to the starting line up to the one that played in the previous game against Romford. Recalled into the side came Gradi Milenge, Eoin McKeown and Ryan Clampin with new signing George Brown coming in for his debut. Included on the substitutes bench was another new signing in Keanu Williams.
Maldon and Tiptree dominated the game almost from the first whistle with George Brown, Johnville Renee and Kieran Bailey taking a firm grip in midfield and made good openings for their forwards that culminated in the first goal after just 8 minutes when Brown got free down the right before crossing for Bailey, at the far post, to head home into the opposite corner of the net. Brown was soon involved again with a good run that was only stopped at the expense of a corner and from this, played short, Ryan Clampin saw his shot just pushed away by visiting keeper Jake Jessup before Brown teed up Bailey for a 25 metre shot that flew just wide. Jammers skipper Joe Claridge then saw his 20 metre free kick just kept out by a diving save from Jessup then Eoin McKeown gained possession on the half way line before sprinting into the Sudbury penalty box before seeing his strong cross shot hit the bar before going over. McKeown then spurned a glorious chance to add to the scoreline after Renee and Claridge combined before the latters cross found McKeown close to goal but he put his header wide then Claridge saw his shot blocked out to Bailey who saw his powerful 20 metre drive deflected over the bar. During these first 30 minutes little was seen of the visitors moving forward and one felt that eventually they would improve and the Jammers may well rue not taking their goal scoring chances and so it turned out as Sudbury gradually came into the game with Jake Clowsley freeing Phil Kelly on the corner of the penalty area from where hit a low shot just wide of the far post. As play evened out the game became a much closer contest and the visitors nicked an equalising goal almost on the half time whistle when Tyler French found Kelly whose ball was misjudged by the home defence to allow Mekhi McKenzie to nip in and fire his effort into the top of the net.

Buoyed by their goal it was Sudbury who started to make the running with French's long free kick finding McKenzie but he put his shot over from close range then a quick break saw substitute Ryan Horne shoot across goal and just wide of the far post. A couple of blocked shots by Renee and Bailey was the best that Maldon and Tiptree could muster as they just could not replicate their fine passing game of the first half as home keeper Tim Brown just held a 30 metre drive from Billy Holland. A deflected effort then saw Brown just able to palm the ball away but only to Ollie Peters but he failed to convert as he put his close range effort wide then Kelly turned extremely well before getting a shot away that Brown just stopped with his outstretched leg. Brown was certainly being kept busy as the visitors continued to come forward but their finishing was almost as sketchy as the Jammers in the first half as Brown touched over Holland's header from a corner then Kelly headed a great chance over from in front of goal. As the second half drew to a close the home side at last got an attack going but substitute Oluwole Akinsanya's header from a Brown cross was well held by Jessup before the keeper pulled off a fine diving block to go down at Akinsanya's feet as the forward burst through on goal. As the game moved into added time the home side must have started to feel grateful to earn a point but their hopes were dashed after 93 minutes when the defence was caught square by a through ball that put Kelly clear on goal and he moved forward before hitting his shot under Brown and into the net. The game was not over yet and despite some desperate play by the home side it was Sudbury who came close to scoring again when McKenzie put in another fine quick turn of speed to get away from the home defence but was then unlucky to see his low cross shot hit the far post before coming out.
