Jammers get back to winning ways
After some disappointing results Maldon and Tiptree secured a good win and three welcome points against Norwich United
Maldon and Tiptree FC v Norwich United FC Bostik League One North Saturday 9 September 2017
Without 7 players out due to injury and one out due to suspension, Jammers boss Kevin Horlock had to make full use of his playing squad which had been strengthened by recent signings Jack Humphrey and Taofiq Olomowewe.
Norwich made a strong start with captain Jamie Speller firing in from a half chance that home keeper Andy Walker just managed to palm away then from the resultant corner Cassimiro Datocampol headed over. Just 30 seconds later in the third minute the home side moved ahead when, from Walkers goal kick Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe got up well to head the ball on to Ryan Clampin and he drove through the middle of the visitors defence before firing past visiting keeper Andrew Wilton. The home side then put in some dangerous attacks with flashes of fine passing football with Johnville Renee weaving his way through before releasing Kieran Bailey but his shot was just blocked then a great crossfield pass by Matt Lock to Clampin saw the latter control well but then miss out with a poor cross. Ogedi-Uzokwe then went on a great run down the left past a number of defenders before getting a dangerous cross over that was just cleared at the expense of a corner before Clampin took on a throw in and give Ogedi-Uzokwe a shooting chance but his shot, although clearing Wilton smacked against the crossbar to rebound out to Bailey who then saw his fierce goal bound drive blocked. The home sides pressure was eventually rewarded after 26 minutes when Renee took possession from a throw in then moved past defenders across the penalty area edge to make sufficient space to get a fine low drive away that struck the inside of the post before rebounding into the net. Little was being seen of the visitors attack with the home side continuing to dominate the game as Jack Humphrey played the ball long to Renee who in turn found Ogedi-Uzokwe who fired a strong drive just wide of the far post then Wilton pulled off a fine save to deny Clampin as the forward again got clear on goal but the keeper just managed to push the ball away. Clampin then shot just over from 25 metres before Harvey Brown and Bailey combined to give Clampin the chance of a dangerous cross that a visiting defender just headed over the bar then from the corner, taken short to Lock, Wilton was just able to keep the centre out of his net. New defender Taofiq Olomowewe then tried his luck with a 25 metre low drive that flew just past the post then just before the half time whistle the visitors at last got something going forward and a long goal kick caught the home defence unawares which left Lawrence Cheese a chance but defender Emmanuel Udoji just managed to get back and block the shot then Speller got two chances at the far post from a long corner but his first close range effort was blocked and his second went narrowly past the post.
Half time Maldon and Tiptree 2 Norwich United 0.
Norwich's half time team talk yielded almost immediate results when after Nathan Stewart had fired a 20 metre drive just past the far post they pulled a goal back after 52 minutes when Speller stepped over a free kick on the edge of the home sides penalty area to leave Stewart to fire in a low drive that seemed to squirm out of Walker's hands to just cross the line. Walker was soon called into action again to just hold a header right on his goal line but the home side virtually put the game beyond Norwich's reach with another goal after 56 minutes when Brown crossed to Bailey who took the ball down well before playing in Ogedi-Uzokwe to shoot low across Wilton and into the far corner. Ogedi-Uzokwe was causing even more problems in the second half and his great run down the left past a number of desperate defenders ended with a long cross to Bailey which he caught first time on the volley but his effort flew just over. Udoji and Bailey combined well down the right to get a cross over to Renee in a good position in front of goal but he shot disappointingly over before on 76 minutes Ogedi-Uzokwe got rewarded for a fine display with his second goal as he showed his strength to get on the end of a long ball forward to then hold off a couple of defenders before firing in a strong shot into the far corner. The home side continued to look for more goals and Clampin's long ball was headed down by Ogedi-Uzokwe to substitute Alfie Rowland who fired in a good effort that needed another good save from Wilton to keep the ball out then a fine six man passing move ended with Bailey's shot from the edge of the area needing the best save of the game by Wilton to hold his goals against at 4. Just as had happened at the end of the first half, on 90 minutes the visitors almost scored when from a corner Datocampol jabbed an effort against the home goal's post and out to safety.
