Romford end Jammers recent unbeaten run
Romford kept up their recent revival with a hard fought win over Maldon and Tiptree
Maldon and Tiptree FC v Romford FC Bostik League One North Saturday 13 January 2018
Kevin Horlock made three changes to the starting line up that had gained a point at Mildenhall on Tuesday night. Recalled were Nicholas Akoto and Dexter Peter with Olu Quandri making his debut. Gradi Milende reverted to the substitutes bench along with newcomers Emmanuel Katundu and Clyde Ikop-Omdu.
The home side made the early running with Kieran Bailey getting well forward before a cute back heel gave Oluwole Akinsanya a shooting chance that visiting keeper Steven Reynolds dived to his left to turn the ball round the post. Bailey and Joe Claridge then combined down the left before the latters cross bobbed around the penalty area before being half cleared out to Olu Quandri but he hit his shot just over the bar. In Romford's first attack Harry Daly was inches away from scoring when a long cross from the right found him in front of goal but his first time effort went over the bar. Play then became rather scrappy with neither forward line looking as though they would trouble their opposing defences with Akinsanya often fighting a lone battle against three defenders and Romford not able to find a good enough final ball. Certainly the home side just shaded the majority of the play but apart from Johnville Renee's 10 metre shot being saved by Reynolds's legs and a header from Akinsanya that Reynolds saved they did not pose many questions for the visitors to answer. In fact it was Romford who came closest to scoring just as the first half ended when the ball was worked into the penalty area before Olakunle Giwa saw his shot only turned away from goal by a fine diving save from Tim Brown to get the ball round the post.

The hoped for second half improvement did come with an early effort from the visitors Connor Hammond, who broke through the home defence, but saw his lofted effport just held by the leaping Brown before the home sides Akinsanya and Dexter Peter combined well before Peter put a strong low effort just wide. The visitors took the lead after 52 minutes when home keeper Brown came out of his penalty area to head away a long through ball and was then rather unlucky for the loose ball to fall right on Harry Daly's feet and his astute lob bounced once into an open net. Romford's confidence was up now and both sides started to play a much more open and expansive game with goal scoring chances coming up regularly. Romford's Hammond was well tackled after he had broken through the home defence and was just about to shoot then the Jammers Renee saw his firm goal bound shot just diverted for a corner by a visiting defender. Romford pulled into a two goal lead after 64 minutes with a fine goal when a free kick from the left hand edge of the penalty area was whipped in for Chris Taylor to put a glancing header into the far corner. Despite two home substitutions it was the visitors who made the next close chance when Taylor broke through but then saw his shot just saved by Brown at his near post before Danny Cossington got up well to the resulting corner but directed his header straight at Brown. With 20 minutes left the home sides attack became more frenetic and three times the referee turned down penalty appeals (only one of which looked a good shout) but still Akinsanya was often left fighting a lone battle up front and it was only as the home side threw more bodies forward did they look really dangerous. Their efforts were rewarded after 79 minutes when substitute Emmanuel Katundu wriggled his way to the byline before pulling the ball back for Akinsanya to score from close range. Despite continuing to attack the visitors goal not too many clear chances were made and only Keiran Bailey's 30 metre shot that was deflected onto the roof of the net and Akinsanya's close range header that Reynolds held on his line caused any sort of problems for a resolute defence.
