Jammers throw away a two goal lead
After looking the only winner for long periods Maldon and Tiptree concede two poor goals in the last 15 minutes to give Grays Athletic a share of the points
Grays Athletic FC v Maldon and Tiptree FC Bostik League One North Saturday February 10th 2018
Jammers boss Kevin Horlock made two changes to the starting line up from last Saturday's win over Soham Town with Derek Ubah and Rhys Henry being replaced by Gradi Milenge and new loan signing Max Porter.
On Aveley's fine looking artificial surface both sides made hesitant starts as they probed for openings and any weaknesses in their opponents. A fine cross from The Jammers Kieran Bailey was just cleared by the home defence then James Folkes put in a great cross to the far post but no Grays forward was able to get to the ball. Just after the half's midpoint events began to get a lot more lively with Maldon and Tiptree's Ryan Clampin firing a good 25 metre drive just over before unlucky home keeper Charlie Burns had to leave the field after suffering an injury. With the usual replacement keeper not listed on the team sheet, full back Ryan Mahal donned the gloves with substitute Callum Thompson coming on to take Mahal's place at full back. Maldon and Tiptree started to create the better chances with Joe Ellul and Joe Claridge combining to free Johnville Renee to whip in a dangerous cross that was just deflected wide by a defender then from the resultant corner Kieran Bailey pulled the ball back for James Shepherd (pictured) to fire in a fierce effort from the edge of the penalty area that flew into the roof of the net to register his first goal for the club. Grays substitute Thompson's appearance came to a disappointing end just before half time when he had to be stretchered from the field with a leg injury which with the previous stoppage added almost 10 minutes to the half. During this time Grays had the ball in the Jammers net from a header from a free kick but the score was chalked off for offside and it was the visitors who came closest to scoring when Clampin swung in a long cross which found Bailey and his volleyed effort from 20 metres was just put over the bar by Mahal.
Half Time Grays Athletic 0 Maldon and Tiptree 1
Although Gray started the second half strongly with Joe Bruce and Tommy Wade both having shots charged down it was the visitors who continued to carve out the better chances. On 51 minutes the visitors increased their lead when Ellul's great through ball put Clampin in on goal but his effort across goal was just cleared at the expense of a corner then from this Ellul rose highest at the far post to head the ball back across goal and into the far corner. Shortly after this a good passing move by Maldon and Tiptree ended with Bailey putting Johnville Renee through and clear on goal but he was thwarted as Mahal showed his defensive, rather than goalkeeping skills, to stick his boot out and divert the ball away before another quick attack by the visitors saw Mahal out of his goal to clear the ball which fell to Clampin but his effort from just outside the penalty area, at an unguarded net went just wide. Visiting full back Joe Claridge then put a great cross in that was just missed by the Jammers front line but deflected out for a corner before the home side sparked into life with Kieran Bishop seeing his 12 metre shot saved by visiting keeper Christopher Haigh before on 79 minutes and somewhat against the run of play Grays were handed a lifeline with a goal when after a left wing corner the ball came loose in the visitors goal area and Stanley Muguo pounced to hit home from close range. Worse was to follow for Maldon and Tiptree when another poor goal was conceded after 87 minutes when a long high ball into the visitors penalty box saw keeper and defenders not taking control and after getting a touch from a number of players the ball seemed to be diverted home by a
defender for an unfortunate own goal. Both sides then made efforts to get a winning goal but neither team was able to fashion a clear opening to leave the Jammers feeling as though they had suffered a loss after being in the lead for so long but finishing up with just a point.
