Jammers go nap at Aveley
By dave garwood
A scintillating first half spell of 4 goals in 27 minutes virtually decided the game in Maldon and Tiptree's favour
Aveley FC v Maldon and Tiptree FC Bostik League One North Saturday 14 April 2018
From the starting line up in the Jammers previous game against Barking, James Walker, Michael O'Sullivan and Ryan Clampin were not available for this game at Aveley. In their places came the recalled Joe Claridge and Harvey Brown with Eoin McKeown making a rare appearance.
On Aveley's pristine playing surface the first 10 minutes play was pretty even with Aveley's Myles Keizer-Burrows putting in a long throw that the Jammers Kieran Bailey headed safely back to his own keeper before the visitors George Brown and James Shepherd combined down the right before the latter put over a dangerous cross that was just cleared at the far post. After the home sides Alex Teniola had turned well in the penalty area before getting a shot away that was comfortably saved the visitors started to get a stranglehold on the game with some quick incisive passing football and it was of little surprise when they took the lead after 16 minutes when a good interchange of passes on the edge of the Aveley penalty box between Brown, Bailey and Chris Millar ended with the latter breaking through towards goal before firing in a shot that seemed to go through home keeper Rhys Madden's legs before settling in the back of the net. Keeping the pressure up Bailey saw his free kick just diverted off for a corner before Maldon and Tiptree increased their lead after 26 minutes when another passing move cut through the home defence before Millar played in Eoin McKeown to take the ball on and drive home from just inside the penalty area. It was three nil just 3 minutes later when Joe Claridge, Bailey and Lee Barnard combined well before Barnard slipped the ball through for McKeown to run through and put the ball into the net just inside the far post. After the the visitors Millar put a 25 metre shot high and wide an ambitious attempt at an overhead kick failed to pay off for Aveley's Alex Stephenson then Jammers keeper Chris Haigh was under pressure to claim a left wing cross but the ball was eventually cleared. A passage of play ending in the 43rd minute resulted in a fourth goal to the visitors when, after Claridge's diverted free kick had just been cleared for a corner off the outstretched legs of Madden, the resultant Bailey corner was headed back across goal where Bailey, following in, was upended for a clear penalty that Barnard converted confidently with a strong shot into the roof of the net. There was still time for McKeown to forgo his hattrick when, after breaking through a couple of challenges, he shot just wide of the far post then Aveley's only real direct effort on goal saw Haigh save well to push George Doyle's fierce free kick from the edge of the penalty area over the bar
Half Time Aveley FC 0 Maldon and Tiptree FC 4
Maldon and Tiptree started the second half strongly and should really have scored at least one more goal from good chances when firstly home keeper Madden made an instinctive save to keep out Joe Ellul's header from Claridge's free kick, secondly when Bailey fired the rebound wide of goal from close range then thirdly when McKeown beat the off side trap to go clear on goal but put his effort disappointingly over the bar. Two early and one later substitutions by the home side did at last produce something of an attacking content and from another Keizer-Burrows long throw one of the substitutes Calvin Ekpiteta saw his shot just blocked by visiting keeper Haigh before Doyle saw his bouncing shot saved by Haigh. Further home substitute Dan Walker was denied by Haigh as the keeper did well to hold the latters fierce shot before Haigh was again called into action to pull off another good save to take the ball off Walker's boot as he broke through on goal. Visitors substitute Harvey Dailly then made an immediate impact with a strong run down the left before finding Barnard but Madden saved well to hold the shot before the visitors made it five goals and a hattrick for McKeown after 78 minutes when further substitute Rhys Henry played through a fine ball to release McKeown to move forward and finish low across Madden and into the far corner. Just a minute later Henry repeated the through ball but this time, although McKeown was put clear. his low shot flew agonisingly just past the post before McKeown took the part of play maker to put Henry through but Madden was equal to the shot to save from just under his crossbar. The latter stages plus added time were well controlled by the visitors to record one of their best wins of the season.
