Jammers hit the buffers against play off contenders.

By

Maldon and Tiptree go down to fellow play off hopefuls Coggeshall Town by 4 goals to one.

Maldon and Tiptree FC v Coggeshall Town FC Bostik League One North Saturday 16 March 2019

Jammers boss Wayne Brown made just one change to the starting line up from last weeks win at Tilbury with Eddie Louis Dsane, after scoring an absolute pearler from the substitutes bench, starting in place of Tobi Coker.

What seems to always be a windy ground was even worse as a strong wind blew down and swirled across the pitch as both teams struggled in the early stages to even keep the ball inside the playing area. Whilst Maldon and Tiptree settled to play their more normal short passing game, Coggeshall, with the wind in their favour, tended to play the ball longer to forwards Ross Wall and Nnamdi Nwachuku and this proved successful as both proved a real handful for the Jammers defence. Nwachuku made an early chance when fastening on to a long ball down the left before pulling the ball back for Tyler Brampton to hit a shot from close range that home keeper Ben McNamara just managed to block before the home side were unlucky when Last Dombaxe's free kick from just outside the penalty area smacked against the bar before rebounding clear. The home sides Matthew Briggs then put in a fine run down the left then went round a defender before seeing his shot blocked then play seemed to become bogged down in midfield with neither team posing any goal scoring threats. This all changed after 26 minutes when Coggeshall were awarded a direct free kick wide on the left and Conor Hubble curled in his effort which by passed a mass of players in the goalmouth to bounce into the net at the far post. The home side tried to respond and Lewis Dark fired a strong low effort just wide of the post before after, 33 minutes Coggeshall increased their lead in almost identical fashion to the first goal. If the home sides defending for the first goal was poor then for the second it was even worse when again Hubble fired in a free kick from wide left which also evaded everything and everyone before, this time, hitting the far post before rebounding into the goal. Coggeshall's Nwachuku then gained possession wide on the right before sending a shot from the penalty area edge just over the bar before, towards the end of the first half, there were a few feisty moments with the referee struggling to keep tempers in check but doing well to keep all 22 players on the pitch. At the end of the half a home short corner ended with Dombaxe floating in a shot that was just headed off the line before trouble flared again as the half time whistle went with handbags being opened and closed around the pitch but no sending off's took place.

The Jammers could not have hoped for a better start to the second half as within 2 minutes they were awarded a penalty after a clear trip on Jorome Slew. Although Danny Sambridge, in the visitors goal, made a good blocking save to Jack Cawley's penalty kick, the ball rebounded back out to Cawley and he hammered his second chance into the roof of the net. Buoyed by the goal the home side managed to put some pressure on the visitors goal with Liam Hope and Dark combining to give Briggs a shooting chance but he put his effort wide before Slew almost played in Eddie Louis Dsane but the final ball was just overhit and the chance was gone. Although having less of the play the visitors were still very dangerous on the break with Nwachuku's pace a constant danger and Tevan Allen almost made a breakthrough but after finding space behind the home defence he could not get any pace on his shot and McNamara made the save. Nwachuku then came even closer when his speed took him down almost to the goal line before hitting a low effort that almost went under McNamara's dive but the keeper recovered well to dive onto the ball as it almost entered the net. With Coggeshall's defence withstanding all that the home forwards could throw at them 2 goals in the final 6 minutes sealed the game in the Seedgrowers favour. The first of them came after 84 minutes when Nwachuku again did well down the left before crossing for substitute Michael Gyasi to fire in a shot that rebounded out to the lurking Wall and he drove a firm effort into the back of the net. Sandwiched between the goals was a fine save from Coggeshall keeper Sambridge when James Shepherd crossed to the far post where Slew knocked the ball back for Dsane, just a few feet out from goal, but his snatched effort was well blocked by the keeper. If the result was in any doubt it certainly wasn't right at the end of play when Nwachuku scored the goal that his performance deserved when he again displayed good skills to control the ball, beat his covering defender before moving forward to put a low shot from the penalty area edge into the corner. Never giving up one last effort from the home side saw a dinked shot from Briggs kept out of the net by a combination of the bar and Sambridge's hand.
