jammers go nap in FA Trophy
Maldon and Tiptree secured an impressive win away at Northwood to maintain their recent unbeaten run
Northwood FC v Maldon and Tiptree FC Buildbase FA Trophy Preliminary Round Saturday 7 October 2017
Jammers boss Kevin Horlock made two changes to the starting line up from the previous game at AFC Sudbury with Emmanuel Udoji and Kieran Bailey being recalled for George Forrest and the unavailable Harry Morgan. There was also a welcome return to the substitutes bench for Matt Lock.
The home side got off to a perfect start with a goal after just 3 minutes when from a short free kick Evans Kovassi got in a cross to Jermaine Osei and he hit a "once in a season" first time volley from the edge of the penalty area that flew past visiting keeper Dominic Kurasik and into the top corner. Maldon and Tiptree soon responded with Ryan Gondoh hitting Nicholas Akoto's cross low and just past the post but he did much better after 13 minutes when he received the ball on the edge of the penalty box before turning to hit a low shot across home keeper Brendan Hazlett that he just got a touch to but could not prevent going into goal at the far post. Northwood's Kovassi was proving the danger man and he saw his deflected cross headed over by Osei then saw his left wing corner headed wide by Lewis Hobbs. After Jammers keeper Kurasik had saved Harry Newman's close range shot with his legs his long kick then put Ryan Clampin clear through on goal but Hazlett advanced quickly to smother the shot. The Jammers moved ahead after 30 minutes with another fine goal by Gondoh when he received the ball from a throw on the right before cutting inside past a couple of defenders before curling in a shot from the penalty area edge that hit the far upright before hitting the net. Just 4 minutes later the visitors moved further ahead when Johnville Renee played in Gondoh to get into the home penalty box where he was tripped for the referee to award a clear penalty which Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe converted with his usual confidence. Maldon and Tiptree were now well on top with Akoto and Renee combining to put Kieran Bailey through but he saw his shot saved then Clampin turned in from the left before getting his shot away but Hazlett again saved. After looking reasonably comfortable the Jammers conceded another goal at the worst possible time---just before the half time whistle on 42 minutes when some slack defensive work by the visitors allowed Kovassi to bundle his way through a number of tackles down the right and his cross to the near post was fired home again by Osei.
Half Time Northwood FC 2 Maldon and Tiptree 3
Home hopes of an early goal to even up the scores were dashed just a minute into the second half when the visitors Renee gained and kept possession on the edge of the penalty area before firing a low shot across Hazlett and into the far corner to again open up a two goal margin. Just 5 minutes later, in the 51st minute, the Jammers virtually made the game safe with another goal when Akoto got past a couple of defenders with a strong run down the right and his cross found Ogedi-Uzokwe in front of goal and he had an easy job to put the ball into the net from close range. Oliver Kensdale, at the heart of the visitors defence, was putting in a good display to limit the home forwards to the minimum of chances but a misplaced pass by another defender gave Kovassi a shooting chance from 25 metres and Kurasik had to be at his best with a diving save to turn the ball round the post. Maldon and Tiptree then went on to dominate most of the rest of the half with Clampin again being denied with a strong shot from an acute angle that Hazlett just managed to save with his legs then Hazlett pulled off another fine save to turn Harvey Brown's 25 metre shot round the post before, from the resultant corner, substitute Suliaman Bah fired just wide. Gondoh then looked to get his hat trick goal but his shot from 20 metres went wide then Clampin fired a good low ball across the goal mouth with no one getting a touch before Ogedi-Uzokwe saw his goal bound shot just deflected off for a corner. Still the chances came and went with Clampin playing in Bailey to get a 15 metre shot away that was well saved before a rare foray from the home side saw Kurasik just hold a cross at the second attempt after Kovassi had again got the ball into the Jammers area. Right to the finish the visitors were continuing to make reasonable goal scoring chances and really should have ensured a bigger win but a good run from Bah ended with a ball back to Akoto but he shot over then Bailey's shot was only pushed away by Hazlett but Clampin hit the loose ball wide when well positioned.
