First Team Coach, Steve Southgate (pictured) has caught up with us ahead of Saturday's game against Tilbury.

Q1: Welcome Steve! You have recently joined Kevin Horlock’s coaching staff. How did your new position come about?

A1: Kevin and Mark asked me to join them as part of The Management/Coaching Team as I have some experience around the non-league football, which gives them more eyes, ears and constructive input on match days and on the training pitch.

Q2: Like Kevin and Mark Levey, you also work at Colchester United. How does your role as Coach, tie in with your job at The U's?

A2: The outcome is the same as it is for Kevin and Mark. By producing and developing players of a high quality, which has happened already at Park Drive, as players have already moved on to Colchester, but there is the winning factor at Maldon & Tiptree.

Q3: Within your role as Coach, how do you intend to influence the team?

A3: I have already by encouraged players, by bringing them together by club philosophy, also to be mentally and physically stronger as a team, rather than individuals. I am also trying to install a good work ethic off the pitch and on the pitch, which we are slowly seeing the rewards of. It is important that I am honest with the players.

Q4: At the moment, we are sitting just outside the play-off places in the league table. Where do you expect us to finish come the end of the season?

A4: I would like to see us promoted, which is the aim for all of, but it is early days yet and there is a long season ahead of us all. But, we are optimistic, the lads have responded well in recent matches and they have shown good character, which is what we are all trying to achieve.

Q5: On Saturday, we travel to Tilbury who are five places below us in the league. In their last five games they have lost two, won two and drawn one. They beat us on penalties in the league cup, not so long ago. How do you expect the game to pan out?

A5: I think you have to be realistic in football. Tilbury hav ea very good team, which was evident as they recently drew 0-0 against an impressive Cheshunt outfit. They are a hard team to beat as any team can be on the day.

We are always positive going in to a game, which then goes over to the players, as they try and play to there full potential and work on our a good game plan, which hopefully see us come away with 3 points from Saturday’s game.
