Maldon and Tiptree succumb to Enfield Town at rain soaked Park Drive

Maldon and Tiptree FC v Enfield Town FC Velocity League cup 4th Round Tuesday 27 November 2018

Both sides made a few changes to their starting line ups and Premier League Enfield Town got off to a flyer after just 4 minutes when Bilal Sayoud got away down the right and his cross was headed firmly into the corner of the net by Taofiq Olomowewe. Maldon and Tiptree tried to respond with Jack Cawley hitting a free kick wide and Callum Jones firing over but it was the visitors who carried the greater threat. After passing up a number of reasonable scoring chances the visitors increased their lead after 19 minutes when Aaron Greene put in a fine strong run down the left before crossing for Liam Hope to crash his shot home from close range. On a slippery surface the standard of football produced by both sides was extremely high and chances for both teams came and went with keepers---- Ben McNamara for the home side and Jammers old boy Joe Wright for Enfield being kept busy to keep the scoreline down although half time came with, surprisingly, no further addition to the scores. As the rain relented in the second half both teams again found it easier to prevent goals than score them with Enfield's Hope and the home sides Jones both missing reasonable chances. Home substitute changes within the last 20 minutes or so seemed to encourage the Jammers to play a more forceful game and attack the visitors defence with the result that the contest became much more evenly balanced with the home side almost reducing the deficit on a couple of occasions before they finally did with 4 minutes plus added time left to play. The goal owed much to Sammie Mcleod who gained possession of a long ball to the for post before tricking his way down to the goal line before putting a short low cross into substitute Decarrey Sheriff who had an easy task of touching the ball into the net. During this final few minutes the Enfield defence somehow kept the ball out during a mad goal mouth scramble and were then indebted to Wright for a fine one handed diving save to keep out McLeod's strong low shot.

Maldon and Tiptree wish Enfield Town the best of luck in later rounds of the competition.
