Jammers into the hat for the 3rd round league cup draw!!
a good win on a hot sunny day!
Maldon entertained Hitchin who made the long journey over from Hertfordshire for a second round EJA cup game on a warm but breezy afternoon. We were still missing the injured Kyran and suspended Simmo started with a tweak to the system with Ed pushing forward, Jack dropping into the back four and Jonno getting a start in the centre. The early stages saw Hitchin settle well and play some nice fluid football. Maldon threatened as Stef won a ball and turned inside but his curling shot was well saved. Dylan was narrowly wide with a strong header from Joe’s corner and Ed got onto a long ball and was only denied by a superb reaction save from the Hitchin keeper. On 17 minutes Hitchin nearly took the lead only to be denied by a brilliant last ditch goal line challenge from Rafe, the relief was short lived though, Maldon cleared the resulting corner only to an onrushing midfielder who struck a powerful shot into the top corner. Maldon levelled within 5 minutes, Ed won a flick on releasing Jack down the left and his early cross was perfect for Tyler to side foot home. Hitchin continued to threaten, Ports saving a strong shot before another crashed against the Maldon cross bar. As we neared half time Maldon got some territory. Dylan was again close with a header before another Joe free kick saw Banners challenge the keeper who flapped a bit with Jack on hand to volley home. Rather than close shop for the whistle though Maldon failed to get close to the next attack and Hitchin worked through too easily to bundle an equaliser. 2-2 at half time.
The second half saw Albert, Ross and Stef come on to inject some pace up front. Maldon took control of the game and from a series of free kicks took the game out of reach of Hitchin. Firstly Joe’s lighted ball found a volley from Dylan and his shot powered into the top corner. Fred had a free kick blocked before Joe played another in from the right hand side for Banners who rose well and headed home for 4-2. On 64 minutes Albert found Jack who curled an inviting ball across goal for Ross to score his first for Maldon with a strong header. Hitchin kept some life in the game with 10 minutes left but only after Ports had made a great save followed up by an even better one from the rebound but unfortunately even he could do nothing with the third. Hitchin continue to press and Maldon needed to be on their guard to see out time and progress to round three.
A good win and the parents agreed special mention should be made of Tyler’s tireless running up front, a great example to the team and work which creates great pressure on the opposition defence. Next week a trip away to Great Wakering in the league.
Come on you Jammers……..
